Obstructive Sleep Apnea in Women
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) was originally thought to be a male disease, yet now we know women of all ages experience OSA. It’s a heterogenous disorder, with multiple mechanisms contributing to the breathing pauses. The clinical presentation and experience of OSA by women is somewhat different than in men, with women being more symptomatic, and more likely to present as insomnia. The prevalence of OSA increases during pregnancy, and may contribute to preeclampsia for the mother, and reduce APGAR scores at birth. Unfortunately, OSA is often undiagnosed, so understanding the clinical presentation along with the best current diagnostic methods is critical. Consequences of untreated obstructive sleep apnea include cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome.

The good news is that treatment options have increased recently, so there are now more ways to effectively treat the disorder and thereby prevent the negative consequences of untreated obstructive sleep apnea. With the identification of unique phenotypes, precision medicine for OSA is now possible. Along with CPAP therapy, which has long been considered the gold standard treatment, there are now mandibular advancement devices, hypoglossal nerve stimulation, and various upper airway surgeries. Some drug therapies along with orofacial myofunctional therapy have shown promise.

You Are What You Eat: The Gut Microbiome from a Dietary Perspective
What is the best diet? Is it vegan, ketogenic, carnivore, Mediterranean, low FODMAP, standard American diet, or maybe the Blue Zone Diet? Although this topic has been explored for decades, not much evidence has been discussed via a gut microbiome perspective. With the advent of technology, we may evaluate the effects of specific diets from a gut microbiome viewpoint. By evaluating evidence-based markers, such as Microbiome Abundance and Diversity, Dysbiosis, short chain fatty acids, inflammatory markers and immunology markers, we can objectively assess the effects of diet. Additionally, by studying epidemiological data, we can elucidate commonalities amongst varied diets to delineate aspects of health that contribute to a healthy gut microbiome. Let’s dive into some cases and explore the concept of diet from a microbiome perspective. Attendees will walk away with a greater understanding of how to best serve our patients regarding this foundational aspect of health.
